What is AKT?

AKT (Activism from the Kitchen Table) is an initiative part resourced by The Corrymeela Community with a particular interest in the urban environment of Belfast.

The people involved are a loose network of women and men with a common interest in engaging with contemporary social and ethical issues at the level of education, conversation, debate which informs local action. We have a shared sense that in the Belfast area there is a need for people of faith to have spaces where cross pollination could occur. We hope that these spaces might offer opportunities for the meeting of minds and hearts in ways that facilitate AKTion as people galvanise themselves and organise to support one another in on-going social action and social change.

Studies show that the most successful social change movements have an emphasis on relationship building, sharing of ideas and knowledge, and sustained support of individuals in the pursuit of change.

Hence, AKT have decided to incorporate into the ethos of the gatherings times to share literature, invest in good conversations, around the table, with a ‘pot of tea’. We all know that some of our best ideas have come when we're relaxed, supping a brew. Thus the image of a teapot to represent our AKTing and BEing.

If you would more information on how you can get involved email emmacowan@corrymeela.org or introduce yourself to the network by joining AKTion.ning.com

Coming Soon: (rest)

We can get so busy working for a better world that we're tempted to neglect our need for rest.

At the beginning of Advent we'll purposefully take stock of the dark season we are in, and seek to (rest) in the midst of what is normally a crazy frenzy in the lead up to Christmas.

Welcome to join us in conversations about AKTion and contemplation, the lost art of relaxation, bringing rest to work, idling and moodling, massage, and the theology of rest. There'll be a fallow resting space, and experimental creative spaces too.

Come to the table, enjoy good company, mulled wine and minced pies, a cuppa and a chat. You never know what AKTions will come of the connections...
